TIPS FOR KEEPING CHILDREN SAFE ONLINE:
- Talk to your child about their online activities – often.
- Supervision is essential. Know what your children are doing online, who they are interacting with and what platforms, apps or games they are using.
- Check privacy settings. Understand app settings, including privacy settings. This could include turning off location settings, setting profiles to private, or turning off chat functions.
- Be approachable. Coming forward isn’t always easy and children may feel reluctant to tell parents about online issues if they believe they will be punished or have their devices taken away. This can also make children more secretive and at greater risk of exploitation.
- Know how to report. If something goes wrong online, it is critical your child is supported. Know how to take action.
- Establish a Family Online Safety Contract. Developed by ThinkUKnow and The Carly Ryan Foundation, it has been designed to help parents and carers start online safety discussions with their children.
HOW TO REPORT ONLINE CHILD ABUSE
- If you believe a child is in imminent danger, call police on triple zero or visit a police station.
- Collect evidence – take screenshots or photos of the content. Once you have evidence, block and report on the app, site or platform where the issue occurred.
- Online child sexual exploitation can be reported to the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation at https://www.accce.gov.au/report or by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
