Hugh Jackman will join bands Coldplay and Pearl Jam on stage in New York this weekend to highlight global poverty.

The Australian star of Pan and Wolverine will be joined by wife Deborra-Lee Furness, and musicians Beyonce and Ed Sheeran for the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park on Saturday afternoon (New York time).

The event comes as Foreign Minister Julie Bishop joins more than 150 world leaders to sign up to the United Nations sustainable development goals, which will drive poverty reduction plans through to 2030.

Jackman has been part of the Global Citizen online promotion as well as a campaign called Live Below the Line to change the way people think about poverty.

It challenges people to spend only $1.50 a day on food and drink for five days as they raise funds for charities.

“The Global Citizen movement is proof that when we come together and raise our voices, our leaders pay attention,” he said in a statement with Furness.

Jackman will next be on movie screens as Blackbeard in Pan, which will be released on Thursday.
